Meridia was once a very popular prescription diet drug in both Canada and United States.
It was first released in 1997 by Abbott Laboratories, but even then it came with many questions and was voted on by the FDA as having more risks than benefits.

The patient information listed on every Meridia label states that the drug could cause primary pulmonary hypertension, a rare but fatal disease. In addition to that, complications not listed range from mild to very serious. Some of the mild side effects often experienced when taking Meridia are: headaches, dry mouth, constipation, increased perspiration, and insomnia.
There are still many more side effects which are far more severe and could be experienced when taking Meridia. These are: anorexia, stroke, seizures, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, inability to think properly, and heart disease. Just prior to the recall, there were also studies done on the drug that proved it to have severe cardiac side effects.
Conclusion
Meridia has been proven to be one of the most effective weight loss products on the market. But the side effects are so severe that it is no longer available in the United States. And there’s good reason for it.
The Public Citizen, a non-profit consumer awareness group, found that Meridia was responsible for 29 deaths; and new disorders and conditions appearing in hundreds of patients.
